Meme: Thirty Questions About My Fandom Life

I saw this on [livejournal.com profile] elrhiarhodan's journal, and it looks like fun. Hit me with a number in the comments for some insight into my fandom life. :)

1: How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
2: Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.
3: For each of the fandoms from question two, what were your favorite characters to write?
4: Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?
5: If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?
6: When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
7: Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
8: Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
9: Pairings: For each of the fandoms from question two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?
10: Pairings: Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?
11: Genre: do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?
12: Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?
13: Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
14: Ratings: how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?
15: Warnings: What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?
16: Summaries: Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
17: Titles: Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?
18: Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?
19: When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?
20: Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?
21: Sequels: Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?
22: Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?
23: When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?
24: Betaing: How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?
25: Music: Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?
26: What is the oddest (or funniest) thing you've had to research for a fic?
27: Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?
28: Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?
29: What is your current project or projects?
30: Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

26: What is the oddest (or funniest) thing you've had to research for a fic?

I've researched a lot of fun things that I'm positive have put me on some security watchlist somewhere. Bombs/EODs - bone marrow transplants and kidnapping protocols - seizures - king cobra antivenin - how the US foster care system works...

I can't think of anything specifically odd/funny though. Hmm...one of the weirder ones was the ibuprofen allergy and how to combat it at home without access to medical care for Roots.

Oh! I did get you to help me find a specific home for the Hughes family to live in for the Neal Hughes 'verse. I've never gone quite that far with research before.

I'll keep thinking on this one :)

16: Summaries: Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?

I hate them. I try to do a "less is more" sort of thing, but it really just comes off as vague. However, I do think that they're important and necessary. I don't know why some writers don't give a summary for their work - it's one way to make sure I will not read your stuff.

I just try to describe the fic in as few words as possible. Sometimes it's just an important scene or moment that I use for the summary.

It's not as hard as the title, but it's a very close second in the list of painful things about posting fic. (Third is HTML coding that's off by a / somewhere)

20: Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?

Definitely! For WC, I remember reading a fic by RC called Too Young to Feel This Old (http://rabidchild.livejournal.com/129590.html) that started with a scene of Peter in a hospital bed and Neal sitting, cross-legged, in a nearby chair. Neal made a sports comment because he'd been watching Sportscenter while Peter slept, and I thought for sure, through the whole fic that Neal was a ghost.

When that didn't happen, I took the idea and wrote Don't Want To Let You Go (http://archiveofourown.org/works/974067), which is the first (and so far only) serious death fic I'd written.

Mostly I get bunnied by you all in chat or by an amazing artwork, but sometimes it happens with a line or an impression I get while reading fic. :D

It's awesome that you get bunnied in chat, because you are the epic bunneh maker. I wrote 76 THOUSAND WORDS because you mentioned you saw a cute dessert delivery truck in your neighborhood.

[identity profile] angelita26.livejournal.com 2015-10-13 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
And that is my crowning achievement of bunniness :D I'm very proud of that, and it is such an amazing story!!

29: What is your current project or projects?

For WC, I may or may not be working on a The Martian fusion/AU. Mostly this involves reading the book right now, but I have an idea for what I want to do with the fic.

I'm also working on my Big Bang, which is a presumed dead fic. I've had most of it written for a while, and I'm using WCBB to push me into finishing and posting it. :D

There are more stories I'd like to write in my 'Verses, and I've always wanted to write the sequel to Holding On.

In Bookstore, I have so many things to write. I'm thinking of writing a long fic to skip ahead a few years.

Umm, may not? I've offered to pay for this!

[identity profile] angelita26.livejournal.com 2015-10-13 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That just means that I haven't started it yet. I downloaded the book so I could have a reference for what happens on which Sol. :D The idea is coming together and all that jazz.

*Happy dances around and around*

18: Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?

Everywhere. Sometimes it's a song lyric, sometimes it's something I see on TV, sometimes it's an experience (I'm definitely writing a story based on my friends' crazy wedding weekend), sometimes it's a prompt someone gives me in chat or that comes out of a conversation with a fandom friend... I can't really narrow down what it is that resonates with me, but I'll hear or see something and have to explore it in fic with a specific character.

#25 please! :)

25: Music: Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

All of the above because it depends on what I'm writing. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes I turn an episode of WC on and write while it plays, sometimes I need quiet. If I need to really concentrate on a scene, then I'll write in silence, but otherwise I do like to have some noise.

I have a playlist that I use to get in an angsty mood. It currently has:
* Skinny Love – Bon Iver (the first four chapters of the story Unbreakable are named for lyrics in this song)
* Sad by Maroon 5 (Holding On is named after a lyric in this song)
* Set Fire to the Rain – Adele
* Someone Like You – Adele
* Chasing Pavements – Adele (she has a haunting voice!)
* Carry On – fun.
* Wake Me When September Ends – Green Day
* See You Again – Charlie Puth & Wiz Khalifa (a new addition!)
* Remains - Maurissa Tancharoen & Jed Whedon (This was the song that played in the season 1 finale of Dollhouse and was performed by Maurissa, who was a writer on the show. I also named a fic after this song. It's hauntingly beautiful.)

Sometimes, I also rotate in:
* The Story – 30 Seconds to Mars
* This is War – 30 Seconds to Mars
* Creep – Radiohead
* I Will Follow You Into the Dark – Death Cab for Cutie (I've named stories after this song – more than one I think :D)
* Say Yes – Elliott Smith
* A Fond Farewell – Elliott Smith
* Venice Queen – Red Hot Chili Peppers (my favorite intro to any song ever)

Ooh I love this answer, you have great taste! :D I have a lot of these and love them (been listening to Carry On a lot at the moment!) but there are a couple - the Elliott Smith ones and See You Again that I haven't heard yet. I shall download! \o/

[identity profile] angelita26.livejournal.com 2015-10-14 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! See You Again is the song from the end of Furious 7, so you have probably heard it. It was everywhere for a while.

I used to watch One Tree Hill, and in the first season, one of the characters sang the Elliott Smith song Say Yes, and I loved it immediately. When I sought out more of his music, A Fond Farewell was the other song that I really fell in love with. I think you'll really like them!

Most of my music come from TV or movies :D

I've just downloaded the Elliott Smith ones, they are beautiful! :)

Most of mine comes from TV or movies too - or fanvideos haha! I don't listen to the radio much so they're my main sources!

I know #30 is hard, but I'll go with that anyway.

30: Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

I mostly have moments that I really like, but I'm very proud of Redraw the Lines (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1707182). It was so fast to write but so slow to edit, and I love how it turned out once all that was done. I feel like there's a lot more I could have written, but I was dying to share it with the fandom. The idea was pretty original, and I had fun plotting it out and writing it.

I'm also so proud and happy with Bookstore AU (http://archiveofourown.org/series/53549). There have been a lot of times over the years (19, give or take) that I've been writing when I never thought I'd be able to write an original idea. The world-building seemed too overwhelming and character development felt terrifying… But Bookstore is ultimately an original story with two developed characters in a relationship in a story that’s evolving constantly. It's very close to my heart.

How about 15?

15: Warnings: What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?

I'm so bad with warnings. I've been lucky to not be triggered by anything, but that makes it hard to know what to warn for. I don't really write the standard things, so I'm always floundering when I go to post a story. I don't want to upset or offend anyone, so I try my best to post warnings.

I've not warned for anything strange, I don't think. Mostly it's medical squick or lots of angst.

7: Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?

Yes! I had to think about this one for a while, but then I remembered that I wasn't a big fan of Sara until I read Sahiya's The Ties That Bind (http://archiveofourown.org/works/479725). As soon as I started reading that, I became a Sara fan, like a lightbulb had flipped in my brain. And then a Neal/Sara shipper. And then I started writing my own Neal/Sara fic series. Sahiya did Sara's POV in an amazing way that allowed me to understand her. It's just so good, and it definitely changed my opinion of her pretty immediately.
