A knock at the door at nine o'clock at night was unusual enough at the Burke house that Satchmo actually lifted his head and barked at the intrusion. )

Redraw the Lines Deleted Scenes (Neal Hughes 'Verse)
Hey! I said a couple of weeks back that I would post some deleted scenes from Redraw the Lines, the first story in the Neal Hughes 'verse. When I started writing the story, we were doing a lot of word wars in chat, so I wrote a couple different versions of the same scene sometimes, and I also, for a little while, had a minor plot device where Neal was painting his dreams and painted Cathy before he met her.

Here are a couple of those deleted scenes. These are not 'canon' to the Neal Hughes 'verse, but I thought they would be fun to share. Enjoy!

During a sleepless night, Neal paints Cathy )

Neal rubbed his forehead, between his eyes where the ache had been building since his undercover assignment earlier that day had gone sideways. )

Fic Commentary: Neal Hughes
I've never done this before, but I've been thinking about it a lot lately. Redraw the Lines is the longest story by far that I've ever written, and it's also such a canon divergence that I thought it would be fun to look back at what inspired it. This might be a scary look into the inner workings of my thought process ;)

Spoilers: None.
Word Count: ~1000
Summary: Neal's ill on Christmas Eve, so the Hugheses take Christmas to him.

WC - Whole Again
Title: Whole Again
Author: angelita26
Rating: PG
Characters: Reese Hughes
Spoilers: None.
Word Count: ~600
Summary: Reese Hughes reflects on the news that his son Daniel has been found.

Notes: Companion piece to Redraw the Lines. Written for [ profile] elrhiarhodan for the 2013 fandom_stocking. I've been saving it for when I posted Redraw the Lines – thank you all so much for your support of that story and this 'verse, which I'm calling 'Neal Hughes' because that's what I've been calling it since it popped up in my brain.

Reese sat alone in his study with a tumbler of bourbon and cried. Peter had stopped by the hospital that evening and delivered three words that he thought he'd never hear – 'We found Daniel'. The other proverbial shoe dropped almost immediately; he and Neal Caffrey were one in the same. )

WC - Redraw the Lines
Title: Redraw the Lines
Author: angelita26
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Neal, Peter, Elizabeth, Diana, Hughes, OCs (The Hughes Family)
Spoilers: Up to the Season 2 episode Point Blank
Beta: [ profile] embroiderama - I made many changes after her pass, so any mistakes are my own
Word Count: ~19,000
Summary: Reese Hughes' son was kidnapped when he was three-years-old. Twenty-four years later, when his daughter desperately needs a bone marrow transplant, Hughes discovers that his son has been right in his own office, working as Peter Burke's CI.

Notes: The prologue breaks from canon during the events of Point Blank, and as such, many of the words belong to Jeff Eastin, writer of the episode. Also, I researched the hell out of the medical aspects of the story, but I'm not a doctor, so creative license was taken at times.

( Neal heard Diana call his name, but he didn't care. He was so close to confronting Fowler, to confronting Kate's killer that nothing else mattered. He grabbed the knife from the display case and sliced through the rope holding the banner without much thought. His body and mind felt both disconnected and so incredibly in-tune with each other at the same time. It was exhilarating. )

Acknowledgements )

I dedicate this story to the memory of James Rebhorn. Hughes was one of my favorite characters, and I will miss him greatly in the last season of our beloved show.
